Hamilton Ohio

Traveling to Hamilton Ohio? What you need to know

Hamilton Ohio? If you’re not from Ohio you may not have heard of this small town north of Cincinnati.

My initial reaction of Hamilton was it was very historic. For a town named after Alexander Hamilton, I should have expected that. The first thing you’ll notice, apart from the historical buildings, in Hamilton is their appreciation of the arts. From painted building murals to statues, this town has plenty to see.

What brought me to Hamilton? The Hamilton NightGlow Marathon, you can read about how that went here!

Two nights in Hamilton, here’s what we did:

Places we ate:

Neal’s Famous BBQ – Easy decision, just go. Its not the style BBQ I was born and raised on in Texas (nothing ever is), but this was some good BBQ. I had the chopped chicken sandwich, Mac n cheese and potato salad. If you can’t decide on anything like me, get that combo, you won’t be disappointed!

Karen’s Pizzeria – Very small mom and pop Italian food, if you’re there on a Friday go for the combo lasagna, salad, bread, and drink. Solid deal if you are hungry.

Hyde’s Restaurant – We had breakfast here so I can’t speak for anything else other than the biscuits and gravy. The epitome of family run, home cooked food.

Things we saw:

Walking around Hamilton Ohio is very nice. If you happen to be there on a Saturday they have a farmers market around the old court house. There are many painted murals around town. See if you can find them all!

Interesting fact about Hamilton Ohio:

If you fly into CVG (Cincinnati/NorthernKentucky International Airport) like we did you’ll end up driving through 3 states before you get to Hamilton. Kentucky -> Indiana -> Ohio

Elevation / Course Type:

Flat

Lowest Level:  566

Highest Level: 595

Difference: 29ft

*based on one loop

Time:

In 2018 the race had a start time at 6:00pm.

To no ones fault but my own, I expected the entire race to be at night, with no sun. You have about 2 and half hours of sunlight before you get that “at night” race experience.

Temperature:

Race time temperature was 82 F with humidity at 92%

Sometimes that’s just the hand you’re dealt.

Pro’s

  1. Well put together, great concept for a marathon race.
  2. Boston Qualifier
  3. Half the race is at night time (no sun)
  4. Plenty of water stops

Con’s

  1. Not a lot of signage (but mostly common sense turns)
  2. Still a “Small” race (I think more participants helps make the marathon a more enjoyable race)
  3. Half the race is during the day (sun/heat)

Bonus

After your race you get food and a beer! If thats something you enjoy doing after a marathon you’ll be in for a treat because right behind the start of the course is a BrewHouse where you can get some local beer.

Overall

I think if Hamilton NightGlow continues to put this race on it will grow and become a very popular race.
